I wonder if the heightened feeling of empathy we get from seeing animals suffering is due to the fact that we cannot know what they are truly feeling. It's a bit oxymoronic but since we know how other humans feel and are used to that suffering we feel it less. We know how humans can be and what they think. A poor cat can do nothing. We have no idea what it is thinking. It's a purely innocent being purely driven by its God given instincts. There is something melancholic about that.
