They do make an accurate point about how the system insidiously considers alcohol and drug retailing to be essential services (but not churches), something which I observed early on in the Corona Crisis.
When I went to vote for Bernie Sanders during my state's primary elections last month, there were only a handful of boomers at the polls, whereas across the street, there was a line stretching down the sidewalk for a marijuana dispensary, composed mostly of young adults who would be natural Sanders supporters, if only they would participate in politics. But they were too busy lolw33ding. And unsurprisingly, Sanders lost.
Those in power want exactly this: to control the people through their vices. And in another era, religious upstarts would be the ones to competently lead the resistance to this, fusing populism with morality, rather than populism with narcissism (like the cult of personaliteehee surrounding Trump on the right, and the narcissistic self-indulgence typical of the supposedly pro-social libertines on the left; and also the narcissistic self-indulgence of libertarians disaffected with Trump on the right, but at least they don't pretend to value anything other than psychopathy).
