Genes and nature do not give a shit about your personal happiness or well-being, and there are many traits that are advantageous from a reproductive standpoint but detrimental in terms of long-term survival or lifespan.

I suppose some people like to fantasize that some fraction of genes of theirs may still be evident generations from now in their future descendants, but we would be long dead by then, and all of the hardship, time, and sacrifice that people went through just to pump out and care for a few offspring just means less time for them as we only have a finite time on Earth and it is not like the genes that people pass on are self-aware.

You are right that nature does not care about personal happiness. But that is exactly the point. We are not outside of nature, we live under it. You can say reproduction is a hassle, but so is eating, sleeping, and working to survive. None of these things are done because they feel good all the time. They are done because without them there is nothing.

The truth is, every civilization, every achievement, every comfort you enjoy, exists only because people before you reproduced. You may not care about your line continuing, but if everyone thought that way, the line would end entirely. Personal preference does not override the fact that survival of the species depends on men and women fulfilling their roles. You may find no meaning in that, but it is the only meaning that predates and outlasts everything else.
