I come from this system and it is enraging to think about sometimes. The constant obsession with purity, abstinence, and complete abrogation of anything sexual in general. It's actually insane when I think about that there are people who not only don't feel sorry for me but actively celebrate the deprivation and isolation I have experienced. Now I'm old enough to see it happening to others I care about too. My brother is nearly 18 and they did the same to him. Has had basically no interaction with the opposite sex, spent his teen years rotting in his room just like I did.

Some people here, without contextual knowledge, might be eager to glorify such fundamentalism as a means of keeping foids in check. But that's not how it works in practice. The onus of conduct is often thrust upon the men, while the women get away with dressing however and doing whatever they want. These are complex subjects that are hard to summarize succinctly, but this is an overview for now.

Makes sense that religious institutions like the church used to (and probably still do) cooperate with the elites. Virgin women for the rich, coping with "purity" for the poor.

Some sects (ironic how that word is phonetically equivalent to sex) are so ragingly fundie that they won't even associate with an established church. That was my personal experience. My isolation was universal.
