I'd rather work or study but it looks like I simply don't have the emotional wherewithal. The reason being that my basic human needs are not met, and I guess never really were.

You work to better yourself, not for soyciety. It allows you to become self sufficient to a certain extent and to live alone, with a set structure and direction in life instead of being aimless and isolated in your room 24/7. If you remain NEET there is the real possibility of your parents kicking you out from the house in your late 20s or 30s, then you end up homeless with zero skills.
