A majority of reddit suffer from depression. Their defense mechanism is to deny or distract or try to sink tons of money for self improvement. When you look at the front page, there is usually massive upvotes for incredibly syrupy content. They love eye bleach fairy tale-like content. Cute things. Things that “remind” them to have faith in humanity. They are so obsessed with this type of stupid brain dead shit. Recycled quirky memes. Stupid obsession with star wars. Legitimately all the upvoted content is the most syrupy stuff, like dogs playing with snow or something lol like I get it dogs are cute, but why are people devoting time out of their day to write 10,000+ comments on a five second clip of some random dog lol performing something slightly amusing. I think you really got the crux of it though, I imagine a lot of redditors (not even being ironic) are actually depressed and seeing shit like that or pretending to be upstanding citizens online if their form of getting validation or a dopamine hit in the same way that being self-deprecating and coming on this website to make fun of myself gives me a slight dopamine hit as well, as my brain has rewired itself to get pleasure from self-hatred.
