I've been playing RE1 remake for the first time. I've played the original before, but I haven't beaten the remake. What's surprising to me about the remake is how much scarier it is than the later entries (even RE7) due to the Crimson Heads. The Crimson Heads are not scripted and almost every zombie you kill can become one. You can't just burn all the zombies either because your fuel supplies are limited. This makes the game extremely tense. You never know when you're going to encounter one.

And if you do encounter one and don't have shotgun amo, you can get raped. Even if you survive, there's a good chance your amo reserves are going to be emptied leaving you vulnerable.

If only newer Resident Evil games would introduce some form of RNG based enemy like this. Sure, the antics we saw in 7 were scary the first time, but on playthroughs they lose their kick. The Crimson Heads are terrifying because you don't know when they might strike.

Also, Jill's jiggle physics are just right....

I don't find it scary. RE7 is far scarier.

I am glad Ii am not the only one who'd held out until now to finish it.

I want to, as I do with many older games I won, but there is this fear in me, lingering.
The fear of being disappointed by the game or being so satisfied that I want the game to never end.

It happened to me wirh Crash Bandicoot Warped.
When I had finished it, I was happy and sad at the same time. :/

What a coincidence, i was playing it too haha. I have only played re2r, re3r and re4r as RE games before. REmake or RE1R is my 4th game in the series. I am on my 2nd playthrough rn. I always felt i wouldn't ever get scared of old games cause they have shitty graphics. But this game really did scare me. Maybe cause it has alright graphics. Idk. I would put it lower than re2r on the horror scale. But it ties with the other 2 remakes. I have never played RE7 but i am pretty sure if i were to ever play it, it would dethrone re2r as the scariest game i ever played. And it being super scary is the reason why i haven't played it yet. The level design(the map) of RE1R is really nice but it lacks in the gameplay department(yk shooting, camera, movement, zombie behaviour, grapics). I would really love to play this game being remade in the new RE engine.

One of the only remakes that doesn’t skim or cut corners on the original, Great game.

This is what survival horror is about. Crimsonheads should be burned in tougher locations but you will need to play the game again to gifure it out where.

RE7 is scarier on the first playthrough, but becomes subsequently less scary afterwards due to its scripted jump scares. Still a good game.

Crash Bandicoot Warped was mediocre tbh. Too easy and too many unfun gimmicks. At least Crash Team Racing is great.

There's less alternative outcomes and it changes things such as the dog jumping out of the window to surprise you.

Earlier Resident Evil games were more focused on puzzles/survival aspect than they were combat. The series started becoming more action focused with 3 and 4.

Cool that you are enjoying it. People usually complain about fixed cameras in old surv horror games but I find them good for the atmosphere personally.

The level design in RE1 is (some of) the best level design I've seen in a game. Every room is designed beautifully, and almost every area serves some purpose and they are interconnected in interesting ways. Regarding the gameplay, I agree that the shooting and movement aren't top notch, but I've found the resource management and the puzzles more fun than the modern games. I used to love replaying the game despite it's lack of unlockables.
My favorite RE save theme is also RE1's (re1 1996's theme is my favorite, then re1r second)

I'm surprised the Crimson Heads haven't shown up in other RE games. It was one of the scariest gameplay mechanics in REmake.

One of the best games ever made, best remake ever made, the backgrounds still hold up in such a nice way, like a live painting, if that makes sense, especially in the mansion, the blurry mess gives it that painting look instead of a more realistic look which has made it age very well

Crimson heads also genuinely scared the shit out of me when I first played them
