I'm convinced the Russians did gods work by pacifying Chechnya. The Chechens are like the Somalis. They are a cancer wherever they go. Its funny as well because the Americans were so butt hurt about what the Russians were doing there and then 9/11 happened and finally i think some of the neocons began to understand just how dangerous using these sort of people for asymmetric warfare is. A lot of Americans went on to die fighting Chechen militants during the invasion of Afghanistan.
The Russians live hard lives man. I'll never forget reading the stories of the Russians fighting the Mujahadeen during the 1980's. I read up a lot when the British went into Hellmand province in 2006/2007. The British quickly ended up spread out in small firebases fighting all over the province. One of the places they established a firebase was Kajaki dam. The provinces hydroelectric generating station. The Muj launched a campaign to retake it from the Russians in the late 80's (1987 I think) and apparently they slowly encroached on the base and the Russians fought to the death. Apparently when they finally took over the base the Muj made their commanders back at base listen to the screams as they cut open the captured Russians bellies and removed their stomachs, cut the linings opened and stretched it over their heads.
