I agree. It makes little sense to use that part of your finger unless you want to damage them. Plus you can get more power by using the knuckles and even more power from turning your body and hips into the strike, getting the level of the strike right is also important. High punches can be ok but sacrifice power for going to the head. Mid strikes are where the power is. Low punches are going to be used if a person kicks you, to try and disable their leg. Hooks and Uppercuts become less powerful the further away from your body they are so when using them keep your hands in and save the energy you would need for them for when your opponent is close to you.
