This study aimed to test if "children with ASD display a subtle but distinct facial phenotype compared to typically developing children.", and it involved 65 (White) boys diagnosed with autism and 41 typically developing (White) boys aged 8-12 years. TD = Typically Developing aka NT
It also found that boys (autistic) with certain facial morphologies could display similar behaviors/patterns.
To put it simply, boys with autism will typically show these features:
We all know autism is a major cause of inceldom and negatively impacts our lives psychologically and socially. With this study, it proves your face can display your autism, and I'm hypothesizing it to likely be another major cause of inceldom among autists.

"Boys diagnosed with ASD demonstrate statistically significant differences in facial morphology compared to TD boys"
It also found that boys (autistic) with certain facial morphologies could display similar behaviors/patterns.
"Subgroup 1 appears to be more severely autistic, with only 8% diagnosed with Asperger syndrome compared to 60% in subgroup 2, and has higher SCQ (Social Communication Questionnaire) lifetime scores than subgroup 2"
Features of subgroup 1:"Consistent with the Asperger syndrome diagnosis, boys in subgroup 2 spoke their first words significantly earlier than boys in subgroup1 and the remainder, and they were significantly more likely to be macrocephalic (80% vs 17%) compared to subgroup 1"
- The middle part of their face (facial midline) is shorter than usual.
- Their mouth is wider than usual.
- Their chin is longer and taller than usual.
- The upper part of their face (the area around the eyes and forehead) is wider than usual.
- The space between the bottom of their nose and the top of their upper lip (philtrum) is shorter than usual.
"Linear distances that were significantly reduced in the ASD group included those connecting glabella and nasion to the inner canthi and those connecting nasion with landmarks located on the nose and philtrum."
"We found that essential autism in boys is associated with a distinctive facial phenotype characterized by an increased breadth of the mouth, orbits and upper face, combined with a flattened nasal bridge and reduced height of the philtrum and maxillary region."
To put it simply, boys with autism will typically show these features:
- A wider mouth.
- Wider eye sockets (orbits).
- A broader upper face.
- A nose that looks flatter in the middle.
- A shorter space between the bottom of the nose and the top of the upper lip (philtrum).
- A smaller area around the upper jaw (maxillary region).
