At least witch hunting usually had a purpose, since it's well-known that a lot of the famous witch trials were motivated by money, as the accussed witches' property would be given to the rest of the community, the Church, and so on; while the things it was supposedly preventing (bad harvests, animals dying, etc.) were mostly out of those people's control, so whatever or whoever they thought was the root cause of it didn't really change anything. With pedo hunting however, it's all about sadism; you could maybe say that clout and internet views are a motivator, but in the end, it's just sadism. Worst of all, the demonization of ugly non-NT men and their interactions with children is actively harming children, because we live in a world where shit like the situation in this article:

and worse types of bullying and abuse, happen in every school, everywhere, to at least some child. 90%+ of abuse and other bad experiences the typical child/teen will experience will either come from their peers or from their relatives, but society loves to close its eyes to those sorts of abuse, because the former is coming from other "cute and innocent" children, and the latter is coming from people who are supposed to be taking care of those children and who have socially-approved authority over them. But creepy male strangers? Nobody has a problem with focusing on those, and the more they are focused on, the less focus and scrutiny is going to be given to the people around abused and bullied kids actually making their lives hell every day. Just think of all the "parents know best" and "parental rights" bullshit currently going through resurgence internationally, or how "stranger danger" craze is still a thing, though at least that is being called out here and there for being bullshit.
