Ok. I went in presuming it's about a whimsical adventure in a fairy land with some dangerous creatures/monsters involved. I was not expecting a story about childhood innocence in the brutal reality of war. Or one about Franco's fascist militia hunting down Red Resistance Guerrillas, which takes up most of the movie time.
But most of all I was not expecting it to be in Spanish. That was a surprise, guess I've watched my first Spanish movie.
