We do not live in a survival-based society - we live in a pleasure-based one.
All of our needs (food, water) have been fully accommodated for. Gone are the days of hunting and gathering, where our primary focus was gathering resources to survive. When the necessity to find resources is absolved, all that is left to prioritize is the immediate comfort and desires of a populace.
It is the happiness, the THRIVING of the population that takes precedent.
Because at the end of the day, the purpose of achieving our NEEDS is so we can achieve our WANTS. We no longer have to seek out our needs, because they've been fully accommodated for; the only rational step that follows is to accommodate our wants also.
You need only look at what makes people happy in todays world to understand this: winning the lottery, getting sex and having your ego stroked constitute a persons greatest possible happiness, as opposed to drinking water or eating food.

You also don't need shelter, or electricity, or makeup, tampons, abortion and condoms to survive.
Would you have us all devoid of prosperity, to be stripped down to our bare necessities?
Of course not, because you understand that our wants, in a society where survival is not a constant worry, outweighs our needs.
You don't need love to survive, but this notion is only relevant when a given population's chief goal is survival. Our survival necessities, however, have been fulfilled. We now live in a pleasure-based, thriving society; Therefore our wants take precedent.
And yet people know this. If you banned alcohol tomorrow, there would be riots the likes of which you've never seen before; makeup and tampons, also. But they act like surviving is the goal, and not happiness. They advocate for their right to pleasure and comfort, but not others who might be lacking.
What we're seeing, then, is what we would see regarding the resources in a survival-based society: gatekeeping. In a survival-based society, food and water are gatekept to maintain the accessibility of them: pleasure and comfort are the commodities of the day, and they are being gatekept wrongfully so.
There is no need to gatekeep an experience, a state of mind. It is not a scarce, survival-based resource; it is an intangible and happiness-oriented experience. The proclivity to gatekept any giving commodity in a society stems from our hunter-gatherer days where tangible, finite resources determined life and death. Pleasure and comfort, however, are states of being; they can be 'distributed' amongst societal members to no ones detriment.
A society that can afford comfort and pleasure to all its citizens, but chooses not to, or is perhaps incompetent in doing so, is failing, and will not last long.
