During most of human history, love and sexual relationships were not free. Girls were raised away from boys, teenage love affairs were a scandal, and marriage was the only socially accepted setting into which you could get sex. For most of European history, marriages were often arranged.
The very concept of a "girlfriend" did not even exist until the Roaring Twenties. "French kissing" with the tongue was still a great taboo at the time. I know I sound like an autist, but it's actual historical facts.
What happened is that at some point, society decided to liberalize sex while completely disregarding the consequences for its most vulnerable elements: ugly people, especially ugly men. Given that only 20% of a given population is ugly, our voice was drowned; nobody cared.
