The "online dating doesn't reflect real life, and those dating apps are usually used for hookups" argument is bullshit and here's why:
What this argument states is that we shouldn't take the statistics from these online dating apps as evidence, and that online dating doesn't reflect real life as people on those dating apps are just looking for to "hookup" and are just simply shallow.
First of all these people who use these online dating apps don't exist in a vaccum or some dimension that exists separate from ours, they pretty much live amongst us in different areas of the world. Keep in mind these online dating app users aren't a niche group, in fact there's roughly 10 upon 10s of millions of online dating users (it is estimated that by 2020 there will be roughly 300 million people using online dating apps). So in short we can conclude that a lot of people use these apps, and that we can actually use the statistics to generalise the results for the populations.
So what I'm trying to say is, how on earth can simply state that all those 10s upon 10s of millions of people are ONLY after hookups???
According to datingsitereviews:
"Contrary to popular belief that online dating is all about hookups, only 34% of users said they surf dating sites and apps for casual flings. More users (41%) are looking for friendship, and most users really are searching for lasting love (60%)"

So what does this mean?
Well, as we already know women are very picky. In both tinder and okcupid it is shown that women have high standards, and rate roughly 20% of men as attractive (chad-lites and chads) whilst the majority of men are perceived as being unattractive. Now we consider the fact that we have 10s upon 10s of millions of people using these online dating apps, with a good amount actively perusing relationships on there. If we combine these 2 we get this:
-a lot of people (roughly 60%) are looking for a relationship on these online dating apps
-women who use these online dating apps are extremely picky and go after top tier men, and not men with top tier personalities
-if women are using these apps to persue a partner then this must mean they don't choose someone based their personality traits, but gather their top tier looks
-you can't counter all this by saying that these apps are only for hookups when that only applies to 34% of users
-therefore, online dating can reflect how dating is like both irl and online.
This all solidifies what these online dating apps are telling us: women don't care about your personality, they care about top tier looks. Even for relationships
Shouldn't personality be considered when it comes to getting into a relationship? According to women, apparently not.
And here's a bonus study that shows that looks were more important than personality :

The Importance of Physical Attractiveness to the Mate Choices of Women and Their Mothers - Evolutionary Psychological Science
Prior research investigating the mate preferences of women and their parents reveals two important findings with regard to physical attractiveness. First, daughters more strongly value mate characteristics connoting genetic quality (such as physical attractiveness) than their parents. Second...
