I have not had a oneitis in many years but it tormented me very much when I had one.
Often if not always I got these when I knew the girl I was obsessed with would be never seen again in a short time period(such as being on a trip) and this idea gives more fuel to my oneitis obsession because, unlike school or work, she is gone for good.

I think what OP is getting at, is this detachment makes us vulnerable to developing oneitis if we do actually find a girl who chooses to be around us.
