Im thinking this isn’t just a 1v1 “arena fight”. Its like both of them spawn in to the world irl and its like Death Note where they’re using elaborate conspiracy to try to kill you. Like they could hire hitmen etc
Well, L knew he was about to die. Seeing Light smile at his end probably made him more sad, but he was already sad well before that. L was just standing outside in the pouring rain lost in thought, that seems like the epitome of a sad person to me, or atleast close to it. When he walked back inside with Light, and was rubbing his feet to help him dry, he told him that they would soon part. He already knew he was about to die soon. I think it was being portrayed that L KNEW Light was Kira, but he didnt have hard evidence to drive it home and imprison him again. It was mentioned a couple of times in prior episodes, L doesnt like to say something is absolute without having hard evidence. This is also the reason why he wanted to investigate on his own during the Yotsuba Kira arc, because even if they were talking about killing people in their meetings, they had no visual proof that any of them were Kira, nor did they know how Kira killed.
In this episode, L was standing outside in the rain because he felt defeated. He didnt know what to do with his hunches/theories that Light could still be Kira, because he didnt have enough information. He told Light that they would part soon because he knew he had been defeated, and he didnt know how to win in the way that he likes to win himself, with hard evidence. The scene where he was drying lights feet and massaging them, it showed a still of Light sitting on the upper step while L was below him with his head down as the camera tilted upwards. I think this was done on purpose for people to perceive Light as the superior or victor of their long battle. Put another way, L bowing down to Kira.
L might not have been accepting his defeat, because he was still trying to solve the case, but Im pretty sure he was atleast mentally preparing for it by his actions and previous things he has said. So, when L was dying as Light held him in his arms, yes I do believe he was sad, but I dont think Light smiling was the sole reason for his sadness. Honestly I dont even think L was surprised, he always knew or had a really good feeling that Light was Kira, seeing the smile was confirmation for him, his "hard evidence". Light was nearly flawless in their battle, and him smiling right there was the only "hint" he gave L that he was Kira, everything else was pretty much speculation considering L never saw Light actually kill people. R.I.P L, and lucky for him he didnt try to write a name in the Death Note because then he probably wouldnt be resting anywhere near peace.
Oh and I hate to be that guy, but TECHNICALLY Light didnt kill L. And is it REALLY betraying if you were enemies before you were "friends"? Just food for thought
