Its a lie. Old people are deteriorated shit.
Old people have more experience in life, but of course that doesn't mean that all old people are too smart or wise. For example now old people don't even understand what it's like for young folks.
That experience only meant something when there wasn't a huge technological shift almost every decade. Their small ass village almost never changed. Nowadays all old people experiences are completely irrelevant and can only be used as a way to brag how better their time was compared to yours.

I'm sure centuries ago, when life didnt and technology did not advance as much as it has in the industrial age, this line of listening to your elders was much more sound advice, but its bloody stupid now.

It's just a myth from like the 13th century where you could live and die your entire life and the world around you would have barely changed so you end up collecting a bunch of wisdom and experience. But now in the 21st century life feels like it changes every couple years and these old people don't even know how to use technology so it doesnt apply anymore.
The "wisdom" your elders would have provided in ancient times anyway would have sometimes just been stupid shit like religion too anyway.

Old people in a more traditional part of Russia, Iran or India might well be quite wise, because those cultures can encourage people to become cultured, introspective or reflective. They might well have some valuable insights from experiencing history and seeing the present in perspective. But even young people who read Tagore or Tolstoy are generally going to be wiser than young people raised on Harry Potter.
Boomers or earlier generations still alive in the West are just dumb though.
