For multiple reasons the latter scenario is no longer available to a majority of men. Google house price vs wage parity for the last 60 years - its no longer possible for a single blue collar income to even afford a house, let alone raise a family. Then even if you have the job, you have a new era of feminists and socially/economically liberated women who out earn you because of preferential hiring policies, and have zero interest in you as an average provider. If they even want children, they don't want them with you.

The good news is that this system we have is not sustainable - house prices simply cannot increase forever without the market crashing. We prop it up with immigration from second and third world countries to keep up demand, but that only works as a short term bandaid.
