When it came out, there was nothing like it on the gameboy. You really had to be there, back in 1998. The monster designs were simple, appealing, and in a lot of cases, rooted in folklore.
Then things started to head downhill soon after.
They introduced the annoying clock mechanic, which basically locks content based on the time of day you play it.
The monster designs went to shit. They became way too garish and contrived, someone should’ve been at the helm to ensure they were simple and had the same quality as Gen 1. For evidence of this, look at pokemon merchandising today, in 2025. It’s 99% Gen 1 pokemon.
For me, my pokemon trilogy is Pokemon Red (GB), Pokemon Trading Card Game (GBC), and Pokemon Snap (N64).
