Of course it took a man making a documentary about incels for people to care
Women have been shouting about the toxic influence of certain men for decades, writes Emma Flint. But it’s taken Louis Theroux to elicit more than a sorrowful silence when hearing about the appalling behaviour of those in the ‘manosphere’
If you want the dangers of misogyny to be taken seriously, get a man to speak out about it. Better yet, get him to make a film.
The general response to Netflix’s latest hit documentary has been one of shocked alarm, as if the dangers of incel culture are somehow unknown to society (this despite the drama Adolescence, which also aired on Netflix, being one of the most-watched shows of the past year). The Labour MP Luke Charters posted a detailed thread of his thoughts on X, where he commented on us being in “a new world” and how failure to respond to this issue “could be a disaster for society.” But we’re not in uncharted territory here: women, girls, and AFABs have been shouting from the rooftops about this systemic issue for decades.
Women’s oppression is treated like a philosophical debate; there’s a lot of hmming and ahhing over whether equality regression has even taken place, as if there’s no definitive proof that it’s happened.
Toxic masculinity sits in the Oval Office, inciting conflict and responding with ignorance. When that’s the reality of the world that has helped lay the foundations for the manosphere to take hideous shape, overlooking the experience of women in favour of a man’s point of view is, quite frankly, insulting.
While Theroux's highlighting of the issue can only help in further raising awareness, we shouldn’t need the clout of a single man to override millions of women. Women who, let’s be honest, have far more experience than Theroux will ever have of the ramifications of the manosphere. Awkwardly engaging with it is not the same as being hunted by it.
Theroux being championed as a kind of oracle is surely part of the problem, because we’re still only listening when a man speaks. Undeniably, this perception of men as fonts of knowledge, regardless of whether or not they have direct experience, is one of the ways the manosphere has gained traction. Change cannot and will not happen when male perspectives are still regarded more highly than those of women.
If we’d held men accountable long before now, we wouldn’t be faced with such an uphill struggle.
It’s almost as if believing women makes a difference. Who’d have thought it.
They really did pick the most misandrist author to write this article to be as blatantly sexist & ungrateful as possible! Holy fucking shit! Even when you are a simp who creates media that goes viral in women's favor, it still isn't enough for some people. Damned if you do, damned if you don't!
