Honestly, its just because society teaches them the opposite. The majority of people agree that lookism exists but don't believe its that important which is so odd.

My theory is that women don't like having the self-perception that they are shallow (which society deems as bad), so to combat this negative self-perception they simply just obscure their shallowness to themselves and others, saying they care about personality most. Then men start believing this since women say it so often.
