I’m an Asian American woman - born in Asia. Have a Caucasian partner. I have been living in the US since middle school.
I live in an area that is not very diverse. When I visit places with more diversity, it makes me yearn to be around different people.
We were out at a grocery store earlier today, and there were two Asian women speaking. My partner shrugged towards them, alluding that I was now with “my people.” We were looking for wonton wrappers and it was implied that since other Asian people were there, that we were in the right spot.
I became very upset. I told him imagine encountering comments like that your entire life - essentially being told that all Asians are the same. I’m reminded often that I’m different from the majority here.
We’ve hardly spoken since we got home and it was hard for me to accept an apology as I am still so bothered. Am I overreacting?? I don’t know how to have a conversation around this.
Only a noodlewhore would get offended by this
