A Kenyan athlete named Evans was captured by Ukrainian forces after unknowingly joining the Russian military.
He had traveled to St. Petersburg with other athletes under a sports recruitment program, but was later given documents—allegedly military contracts—which he signed without understanding.
"I had no idea what I was signing. I was later told that I had no other options, since I had already signed the contract"
Evans said.
Evans was handed a rifle and given minimal training.
He was later sent on his first combat mission in the north of the Kharkiv region, but he escaped and wandered through the forest for two days before surrendering to Ukrainian forces.
His story, shared in a Ukrainian military video, sparked mixed reactions in Kenya. Many questioned how he could sign documents in a foreign language without understanding the language.
