I guess it depends on how much the average population actually bought into the party. I'm sure genuine reverence for Mao became religious and meaningful in Beijing, but I'd wager that the first Chinese generation born into the post-revolution system, who were illiterate and living in the countryside, grew up without that. Their old religions were destroyed along with any sense of family values and they were forced to work to death in the fields.
