Mussolini was never really anti jewish until around 1938 when he tried to get on Hitler's side more since Mussolini lost allies after his invasion of Ethiopia. But even then he only persecuted jews on religious grounds.

Didn't this only become a major problem by 1943? — To be frank, I believe WWII was a lost cause, at least in the way it happened in history.
And I don't think Italy was simply prepared to become a pariah state like Bolshevik Russia, because she did not have nearly as much territory, natural resources, population, etc., not to mention that the Bolsheviks won the Civil War at the great expense of the country and because Allied intervention was limited by geographical factors that are not applicable to Italy.
Mussolini should have just stayed neutral alongside the Iberian caudillos.
