Anyone know how to acquire SDI as an autist here? The process seems convoluted where I’m from (Michigan)
- Mainly asking cause I can’t find work here to save my life.
- If anyone wants to used this thread on how to cope or ask for advice on how to obtain sdi benefits themselves go ahead!

Have you been diagnosed with autism? Can’t a social worker help with this?

My mom said I was from our conversations, though from what I can remember and fathom, can’t recall any sign she implied I was diagnosed (likely though since I’m neurodivergent compared to my piers and was put into special ed class which is a space in school primarily for people with disabilities lmfao).

I am on social security, in USA.

The first step would be getting an official diagnosis from a doctor.

Next, you can simply apply for social security online. The government has a social security website for this.

If you are initially denied, you may consider hiring an attorney.
Typically, lawyers for this purpose, do not charge money up front.
They get money when you are approved and get paid.
If you lose, you do not owe the lawyer any money.
Any lawyer who operates differently, is a scammer.

The thing to keep in mind is that the more evidence you have of your disability, the easier it is.
Evidence could include an official diagnosis, treatment records, school/work records, medications you take, etc.
Simply telling social security that your mom says you are autistic……is not going to help you at all.

This. Just get a diagnosis from a doctor.
