So, I am an artist and I know a lot about facial proportions and stuff like that. I decided to make a small personal investigation of what makes a man's face attractive. I selected some generically attractive men, made a quick on-top sketch of them to see what they have in common and how far are they from a perfectly proportionate face (which is actually pretty average btw). Send me pics of guys you want me to research (but front of the face and no smile). Btw don't bother with gigachad, I know you think he is perfect but actually, his face falls into an uncanny valley. He is more or less okay with a long beard but trust me most females won't find those exaggerated features attractive, just as you won't find females with huge fake lips attractive.
I want to add that I didn't go for an exact copy of the face. I went for learning what features play in the attractiveness role.
1. Almost perfect proportions (again perfect doesn't mean most beautiful it just means as close to etalon as possible). Eyes aren't wide or narrow set, the forehead is a bit small (check the thirds — distance from the top of the forehead to the top of the eyebrows, then from the top of the eyebrows to bottom of the nose, then from the bottom of the nose to bottom of the chin). These thirds have to be equal, but it his case it's irrelevant. The lower lip is twice as wide as the upper lip, which is usually attractive. Thick bushy eyebrows, not too low. He is pretty generic in proportions but what makes him attractive is how perfect his every feature is. He is lucky to have a long manly jaw, he would look feminine without it. Nose isn't perfectly shaped but it's okay.
2. Extremely short nose, but not so long forehead compensates for it. Again, wide lower lip. His eyes look narrow-set (most of the attractive men have narrow-set eyes) but they are actually normally set, but look narrow due to face width. Wide jaw compensates the unmanly nose. I used his older picture because he aged very nicely. I think he has an underbite or maybe that's his facial expression (especially in Inglorious Bastards). Weird hairline, but a square top (which is very important for a man).
3. I think his charisma attributes to his attractiveness a lot. But he has a very big forehead which is compensated by the lower third. His face is basically pretty long but proportionally. His nose is short but you don't notice it because it's pretty big. His eyes look narrow set because his face is long, but actually, they are average set. He has thin lips but it's compensated by cheek hollow. Low eyebrows, perfect hairline. The only problem with his is his ginger beard and some minor nose asymmetry.
4. Okay, this dude is considered to be extremely handsome but he actually has acne scars noone cares about. Short wide face with a nice square structure, very pointy chin, full lips, bushy low eyebrows. Finally someone with a little bit narrow set eyes. Thirds similar to Bradd Pitt — small nose, but forehead and jaw compensate. Dreamy blue eyes probably help as well. Nose shape is almost perfect, except too short.
5. This is my version of a giga-chad. Square jaw, normally set blue eyes, short nose compensated by jaw and forehead. His nose has some interesting shape though. His face is very sculpted with a lot of straight lines (not in this pic though) and it makes him very attractive. Bushy low brows, nice lip shape.
6. Okay, this guy won due to his contrasty appearance — pale face and black eyes. Plus, extremely hollow cheeks, his trademark. Too high forehead, a bit short nose, and the jaw don't compensate for the forehead, but the cheeks do. Very feminine lips and eyes, but again — low bushy eyebrows. square forehead, defined jaw.
7. I don't really consider him that attractive but many females do. Let's see. Also, in the photo he holds his head high to the chin looks longer than it really is, I tried to compensate for it. Finally, someone with very narrow eyes. The top two thirds actually match, but the bottom third is much longer. This dude has a very long chin, and it's pretty wide which compensates for his oval jaw and face shape. I guess what makes him attractive are bushy low brows, narrow eyes, fine features. Like there's nothing really manly with him but nothing really wrong. He's also always smiling in the pictures and therefore looks charming
In conclusion, the common attractive features are:
1. narrow-set eyes (or eyes that look narrow-set). This feature is very common but not essential since I know attractive men with wide-set eyes, like Cillian Murphy.
2. Bushy low eyebrows. Eye tilt doesn't matter that much tbh, unless it's tilted downwards too much. Gosling has down-tilted eyes, and so does Pitt. I'd say straight tilt is the best. And eyebrows play an essential role in the overall appearance.
3. Jaw. Everyone knows about it, but I don't agree that only a specific Henry Cavill-type jaw works. Pointy jaw works, large jaw, as long as it compensates small nose.
4. Square hairline.
5. Small nose (or rather small middle third — the distance between the eyebrows and bottom of the nose). Many of conventionally attractive men have small middle third, but they usually compensate it with a large jaw.
6. Lips. These men have different lips, but I've noticed that a combination of feminine lips with masculine jaw/face is very attractive. Not necessary though. Also, lip shape is very important, as you can see in the 1 and 5.
7. Ok, an extremely important feature (and I saw someone mentioned it here) is the thick neck. No comments.
I'd like to try Jon Hamm next time. Send me pics of whom to try, I'll do a quick research if I find the face interesting.
