Or should I say rediscover because it’s a game I’ve beaten before a decade ago: Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze. I spent the last week replaying the country games and while DKC2 remains in my top 10 platformers of all time, Tropical Freeze has made it to my number 1 spot.
Every level has its own assets and mechanics which is unheard of for a platformer. The OST is as good if not better than DKC2, and some tracks go on for over four minutes without repeating itself which makes levels more engaging. I always hated dying because it meant interrupting the current track.
Level design is practically flawless. No platform is wasted and it never feels unfair. There’s no cheap gimmicks or tricks meant to kill you. If you die it’s completely due to you sucking at the game. Some soys claim the controls are floaty, but I had to issue with them.
The only flaws I can think of are the atmosphere and art style are a little generic, unlike the SNES titles which were perfect in that regard. And I still prefer the Kremlings as enemies, but those are all minor niggles when compared to the overall package.
