I don't hate emulators. In fact, I use them as they're extremely accessible. Especially considering I don't have a TV. However, even so, something feels incredibly wrong about playing a game emulated. This isn't exclusive to fan emulators either. This is something I've noticed with any emulated game, even official, because it's a problem inherent to emulators and that is input lag... Input lag on emulators feels wrong no matter how small it is. It's why I refuse to pay for any collection or game that's emulated.
Another problem is modern display making certain games look worse. For example, I was playing Donkey Kong Country GBA on 3ds (which does run natively) and it looks absolutely terrible due to the 3ds screen being so much brighter than the gba's. On the GBA the screen was much dimmer and blurrier so games developed for it looked quiet good. The Crash Bandicoot games on GBA are another good example. Although I'd say those look ok on an emulator in comparison to Donkey Kong.
And finally, there's the fact that modern ports in general tend to be poorly done. They prioritize upping the resolution and clarity more than trying to preserve the games original intensions, which leads to them looking incredibly bad. Oftentimes they'll remove visual tricks the original employed to hide its rough edges. DMC3, Resident Evil remake, SMT3, Halo, and Super Mario Sunshine come to mind.
