But comparing these places is unfair because while Eastern Europe comprises a lot of countries, Japan is an island and has not faced the amount of invasions that were so prevalent in Eastern Europe. This is the kind of situation that can stagnate countries for years.

Maybe Eastern Europeans are not great civilization builders, but they used to be fierce and competent men of war. They prevented Europe from being conquered by foreign armies many times in history. Europe will forever be indebted to them for this.
