Media Music Megathread

One of the best death metal bands, but one of the most underrated. This release and Gorement's the ending quest are two of the best releases of 94' for death metal in my opinion, which would be around the time the genre started declining.

One of the few blasphemy worship bands I like. This, Blasphemy, Abhorer, Impiety, Black Witchery, Conqueror, Revenge, and Goat Semen are quintessential bestial black metal, I dislike most of the other copycat bands who ape blasphemy and conqueror and just have goat in the name.

This album was the last of morbid angel's "golden age", when they were at the peak. This album was also released at the time death metal was more or less reaching the end of it's golden age. Kicking brunelle out of the band was a terrible decision, I felt his solos were more melodic and evil, he had the power to balance out some of Trey's more "crazy" ideas. I didn't like domination aside from a few songs. Formulas was actually a very good album however, it almost felt like a trey azagthoth solo album to me. I really dislike Steve Tucker, I think he's too generic, he doesn't have the "character" of David or Browning.

You should listen to Abominations Of Desolation if you haven't already, Mike Browning might not be Pete Sandoval, but I like the way he makes everything sound "weird". His vocals are good too, like on the song azagthoth (later called the ancient ones on blessed are the sick).

Infester were very ahead of their time
Yeah, one of the few bands that also used slams properly. In 94, death metal was becoming stale, so a lot of bands tried to put their own unique take on it. This lead to good ideas, like Infester, and bad ideas, like most tech death bands.

Timeghoul had also started releasing their phenomenal demos at the time, this was experimental death metal done right. Some bands don't seem to understand these concepts properly, so you end up having shitty bands like blood incantation that blindly worships timeghoul without understand what made it special.

Time Ghoul were amazing. I get what you mean about blood incantation, they're so boring. Unfortunately the current scene is full of glorified cover bands, essentially new versions of 90's bands. I was a teenager in 04, tech death was the dominant thing in the scene. Tech death was obnoxious as hell, I'm glad it's finally on its way out.
Tech death by itself isn't bad, but most tech death bands don't understand why and how it can be good, so it just ends up being guitar wanking.

Ie, gorguts uses tech death elements to create an atmosphere of chaos that feels like an alien world almost, to help transmit the feelings of esotericism in their music. For example, the album obscura is all about the transcendence of all earthly desires, and the music, therefore, is very chaotic and complex, as is the themes of it.

But bands like archspire just use technicality for technicality's sake, there's no rhyme or reason, it's just plastic, and artistically bankrupt.

Also speaking of gorguts, I remember when I was 15 years old and learned the title track of Obscura by ear on guitar. It was slightly difficult to figure out, but gorguts songs are always very fun to play on guitar. The title track off of the erosion of sanity is also one of my favorites on guitar.

Archspire are a joke
Archspire and the new "wave" of shitty tech death have to be some sort of prank. They're all mostly skinnyfat hipsters with their ibanez superstrats who just play a bunch of notes for no reason. This specific trend seems to have begun with necrophagist.

Somebody who understands technical skills and music going hand in hand, in my opinion, is Marty Friedman, and his work with cacophony. I remember when I was a young teenager hearing "speed metal symphony", being blown away, and then spending an entire week or so non-stop in my room learning to play the title track on guitar, and that included the parts of both the guitars in the song.

Most of these "tech death" guitarists aren't too technically proficient really, they don't do much other than basic sweeps and tapping for solos either. To somebody who's doesn't play guitar it might seem crazy, to somebody who does it seems like baby's first sweep picking exercise. I've seen tabs for some archspire songs, it's stuff I could already play at 15.

I'm glad the tech death trend is over.
Glad it's dead. Most death metal made after the mid 90s tends to be painfully generic or copycats anyway. Now it seems, the current trend within death metal is ripping off incantation and the whole "cavernous" sound. I don't care really, these shitty trends must die eventually.

What there needs to be within extreme metal is the attitude of extremity. How many faggots online do you see whining that a band is "racist"? Extreme metal should be for the extreme. This art is ours. It doesn't belong to faggot indie kids who are currently trying to ruin black metal. Morbid angel would cut themselves at shows, dissection killed a man, azhubham haani stabbed a man in the throat, the black legions would send death threats to any major label or zine who tried to interview or sign them, blasphemy all spent years in jail for satanic rituals, terrorizin cemeteries and violent assault.

Have you ever noticed, these are the gems of extreme metal? Those who believe what they say? Those who use music as it is supposed to be, to express their own true deep dark feelings? Because of this, they have a deeper connection with their music. Some normal guy working his shitty office job who believes in traditional morality, love, equality, and democracy, may be able to pick up his guitar and start making black metal, but it will pale in comparison to Burzum, Mayhem, Dissection, Vlad Tepes, Judas Iscariot, Von, GBK, or Blasphemy, because it has no true intent.
