Gender pay gaps tend to be about selective pressures.
A man's marriage prospects increase with his salary, whereas a women's does not. Women are still loved and valued even as low income workers, whereas men are only loved and valued if they can provide for others. As such, men take these jobs that pay more, because they don't want to be alone. Women don't need them, so they understandably tend to avoid them (because they're terrible jobs).
