There is no "essential feature," because there only needs to be one really bad feature to fuck it all up. It doesn't matter if you have the world's best jaw if you have the midface the length of the Grand Canyon, or eyes spaced super far apart or a huge shitty nose.

It's all about having good features that go well together and not having any huge death sentences.
