I just finished reading MONSTER, what the fuck was that ending? Has anyone read this. I’m soooo disappointed right now. I just looked it up briefly to see if anyone has made sense of this but it seems like most people are just coping. It’s one of those ambiguous endings……….

I cant believe this shit. That manga started off so slow but it finally started getting good. I was invested. I had one main question and it didn’t get answered. So unsatisfying I cried. I got a take a breather and do research to see if anyone came up something good.

You didn’t like it? I’m watching the anime next. The ending was real disappointing but overall I feel the story was pretty good.

Things becoming popular with normies can be annoying. It makes finding good discussion on said thing difficult. But normies have their purpose. Sometimes things becoming popular can be beneficial.

I agree but the more I read it the more immersed I got. It got real lukewarm for me but it started picking up. In my opinion the panneling, art, and characters were its strong points.

To me it's johan retreating in shame. He has accepted that he does exist, but is in too deep and can't attempt to build a real life for himself. Having no identity is his identity ironically so he enbraces it. Instead of forcing any ties to reality to disappear like he used to (like killing people, burning down red rose mansion), he chooses to just disappear. I think I’ve had all my questions answered now that I’m watching the show and reading the light novel ANOTHER MONSTER, but my original questions were

How did he become evil? He was already killing as a child was he already evil then/born evil? I guess he internalized his sister’s memories plus whatever other negative emotions he had due to participating in the experiment.

I also didn’t understand why he was dressed as his sister as a child. Was that his own doing? Did he purposely trick his mother into sending his sister to the mansion? I guess that was also apart of the experiment. Having him dress as a girl so none of the neighbors knew there were two kids there.

He was made evil accidentally. Bonaparte thought that if children could be stripped of their identity they'd be a blank page and could "become whatever they'd want to be" but didn't like the czech secret police idea of turning them into soldiers and the twins into the next Hitler so he killed them all at the mansion and encouraged Nina to run away and told her to never become a monster. He wanted them to choose their own identity eventually.

But Johan thought being a blank page was his true self, and any identity he might choose would be fake. Him not knowing whether his mom really chose him and not Nina made him think Franz was right, his and Nina's identities really are fragile. So whenever a couple would adopt them he'd kill them, adoption = parents, bonds, last names. Wolf and Tenma sinned more than anyone in his mind by saving his life since death is the ultimate nothingness, so he wanted not to kill them but to strip them of their identities to prove his philosophy.

I think the moment Johan was truly messed up mentally was when Nina shot him. His own twin, his other half, was fine with killing him, so even that bond was fragile. To him all bonds after that meant nothing and had to be erased. Which is why Nina wanted to apologize to Johan in the end, she knew that she validated his "I'm nobody" delusions.
