In the West, there has never been a time when women had to marry just to survive. They were never forced to marry. In former times, a young woman who didn't want to marry could choose to become a spinster or a nun. There was a certain social stigma associated with being an old maid, but that stigma wasn't strong enough to discourage some women from staying single. There has also never been a time when women weren't allowed to work at all. Before feminism, most jobs were reserved for men, but women were still allowed to hold jobs of a domestic nature. For example, a woman could become a nanny, a nurse, or a tutor and make enough money to help her parents.
