Good point. One of the interesting things from my research is there is no evidence that influenza itself is an infectious disease.
My hypothesis for the last 7 years or so is that influenza is some sort of autophagy process that the body goes through from time to time. It wasn't know until relatively recently how big a factor autophagy is in the body maintaining itself over time.
Autophagy is where the body it clears out cells that are still half-alive but they are not functioning properly. But to kill off large amounts of half-alive cells around a persons body its like chemical warfare inside the body, and the whole process is toxic. Yet once those dysfunctioning cells are cleared out and new cells made in their place the person feels better than before.
People who are elderly they have a lot more senescent cells piling up that need autophagy to get rid of. Which is why 'the flu' can hit them so hard. Of course I have brought up my hypothesis before and people go apeshit in anger saying its not true even when I brought it up on 'conspiracy theorists' message boards.
In medicine itself now the autophagy process is recognized and when it gets intense it is described as 'flu-like' symptoms. I think colds are probably mild versions of autophagy.
