Civilization is not only cleanliness or when things work as they intended to work.
Civilization is a suspension of nature in the name of the great cause.
Civilization is an attack against dominant top-dogs and alphamaleness in the name of a great idea.
True civilization means what the most powerful, influential, dominant are put in their place in the name of a higher being.
It's hard to call modern West truly civilized If people worship rich, criminals, those in power.
All real civilizations were ruled by the same principles. As St. Augustine wrote: "spare obedient, subvert proud".
Chinese idiom "Chu qiang fu ruo" meant 'supress the strong and help the weak'.
In Ancient Egypt, local governors boasted of their fairness and justice in writings written in their tombs.
A noble of Upper Egypt says in his mastaba: "...never was there one fearing because of one stronger than he, so that he complained because of it to the god".
Of course this doesn't mean that these principles often worked in real life but this was the personal ideal, not the rich thugmaxxed rapper or other low-life scum.
