I think it has always just been shit.

Feudalism must've sucked back then.

Always back breaking work enriching the elites (not any different from then to now).

Being a slave, toiling the fields, not making it to 30 or 40, having a relationship/marriage may have been easier then, but then again the slave master owns your wife, and can do anything to her. I don't see any point in sharing partners with other people (which is basically the modern day of having open relationships or engaging in polyamory/polygamy).
