It's detective and may be boring. Sometimes, reasoning of characters sounds weird (i. e., sometimes you don't understand how a dude got X, find out Y etc etc). In the middle and closer to end new characters appear and series get sillier and probably even cringe, someone would say.

I watched maybe half of the episodes 10+ years ago. I think I stopped when those new characters appeared, I think a foid and some guy appears? First half with Light and Ryuk were much more interesting imo.

Yeah, the first new character is a foid and this is the moment when things get cringe. And after the 25 episode (won't spoil what happened there) the anime becomes boring. But I appreciated its atmosphere and symbolism (I mean that episode).

Ryuk talks lesser and lesser as series progress.

It seems death note fans like manga more than anime (because it's more detailed). Still, those who dislike it say both are mediocre (boring and not complex characters, their interactions etc etc).

Honestly, I watched it only because it's famous. Now I watch Attack on Titans and the JoJo adventures for the same reason.
