There's a great series of books by Jeffrey Burton Russell about the devil. One of them is called Mephistopheles: The Devil in the Modern World.

Would highly recommend his material.

It talks about the origins of the character and the symbolism in regards to his multiple appearances throughout art and culture.

Would recommend reading them in order of release though. Think perceptions of evil and antiquity is the first one.
