Not being able to understand others won't even really benefit you, and empathy doesn't necessarily imply that actual solutions are going to be comforting. For instance, the best way to ensure others don't feel pain is to eliminate their capacity to feel at all. I find that most people who claim to be "caring", are only really interested in helping people so long as it makes them feel good while going about it.

But you're right about most men not giving a shit about other men, that much is obvious, everything about modern society screams that this is the case. However the issue is that men limit their empathy to those who they aren't in direct competion with(or rather they limit it to those who they believe aren't competing with them directly). In my mind, this is both an issue of men not having enough empathy, and said empathy being arbitrarily applied. What you're describing isn't derived from pure altruism.

Both are useful depending on how used. & sympathy is basically pitying someone, where as empathy is a more intense form of sympathy wherein you feel the other persons feelings personally as if they were happening to you, like how you recoil when you see someone getting a needle stuck up their prick at the doctor's office, except emotional.
