I picked up the game a few years back and dropped it because, at the time,, I disliked the tracks. After replaying it I have to say that it's above average. I have no idea what I was thinking back then. The tracks are extremely well-designed and require better reaction time than the other Mario Karts. While I wouldn't say they're as good as the tracks in Double Dash or Wii (primarily due to technical limitations.), they're still pretty fun and have some cool obstacles/gimmicks.
The best part of the game is the controls. Mario Kart DS arguably has the best controls out of any Mario Kart game. Everything is tight. It's a bit of a shell shock to go from the newer games back into DS just due to how responsive they are. I was surprised how much easier a track like Delfino Square was on the DS compared to the Wii due to the great controls. And of course, the drifting/snaking adds a nice bit of skill and mastery to the game. It's addicting to practice snaking. More so than any other Mario Kart game because of how quickly you can burst into mini turbos.
All in all a great game. I've been playing too late into the night now at this point. Will be even more sleep deprived tomorrow. Oh, well.
