That’s because men who die by suicide are significantly less likely to have sought help, SANE Australia chief executive Jack Heath said.

“In terms of people engaging with our support services, the ratio is three women for every man,” Mr Heath said.

Despite campaigns aimed at men’s mental health and enormous efforts to reduce the stigma attached to suicide, there’s still something holding Aussie blokes back from reaching out. It's like telling a student with down syndrome to study harder and then making fun of them when they continually fail to do their homework correctly, pass tests, land a job, etc.

If there's no hope for ugly people to receive honest feedback from those around them, we should expect increasing numbers of such people to reach extreme levels of despair and kill themselves.

Off the top of my head I'll guess that bigger brains unique to humans allowed for greater variability in sexual selection in terms of physical attractiveness, and thus allowed for the less attractive among us to still survive long enough to reproduce.
