Macron is making reforms step by step towards what I think is his goal of an America/Scandinavia like free market in France.. but the French leaning towards the Scandinavians in taxes/government spending as a percentage of the economy.

Macron I think is in office in France until 2027, then he can't run again unless they change the constitution which seems unlikely. But we have even bigger plans for him after that.. on to the EU Presidency.

How is France not a free market, especially compared to Scandinavia?

France has this huge set of licenses, permits and quotas internally that make many things this managed economy. They also have this labyrinth regulations and not giving approvals for many trying to sell goods into France. And they have these monopolies in areas that are unusual for Western countries.

So France has been private property ownership, businesses and on paper free trade. But getting the licenses, quotas and approvals is another matter.


Scandinavia on the other hand is weirdly free market, free trade, free enterprise.. even as they have high taxes and government spending.

Here in belgium it's over 50

Even the rulers of the French government seem to have admitted this is too high. Getting out of it takes time though. How its done is say their economy grows at 2% in a year. Ok 1% growth of government taxes/spending that year. So that way the percent of taxes relative to the size of the economy fell a little bit. Year by year then this ratio is falling. Meanwhile gibmedats are also happy to get increases each year.
