Every day I hear the same talking points and rhetoric repeated by boys who spend too much time consuming that content. I go to a small high school with around 180 students in my grade, and this mindset is everywhere. It’s not one or two boys. It feels like half of them.
I had geometry with four guys who, I think were heavily into that stuff. Two of them were openly racist and regularly said the N-word. I had to confront them multiple times over it. My school barely cares about that kind of behavior, and I would probably be more likely to get in trouble for arguing with them than they were for being racist.
One day our teacher was absent. One of the guys asked a girl in the class to rate him. She was someone who was generally considered apart of weird groups of kids and she was also ugly. She rated him a 1, and his friends immediately started laughing at him, saying he got rated badly by a “sub-10.”
Eventually his friends started joking that maybe me and the other girl would have a chance with him if he was “feeling generous.”
At the time, I didn’t even know what “sub-10” meant. Later I asked another guy what it meant, and he told me it basically meant someone who was below the scale or a negative 10.
I went home crying that day. The whole thing happened loudly in front of the class. They weren’t whispering. Other students were laughing too. It felt humiliating.
I hear this kind of language at school constantly. Ratings, “females are bitches,” “sub-10s,” leagues, and endless discussions about who is and isn’t worthy of male attention.
