This study aimed to investigate the impact of loneliness and social isolation on cognitive function in middle- and older-aged adults over a 3-year period. The researchers analyzed data from a nationally representative sample of Spanish adults aged 50 years and older (n = 1691). The participants' loneliness, social isolation, and cognitive abilities were assessed at both baseline and follow-up.
The results showed that loneliness was significantly associated with lower scores in various cognitive measures, including composite cognitive score, immediate and delayed recall, verbal fluency, and backward digit span. Loneliness was also linked to a more rapid decline in cognitive performance in two out of the six tests. Similarly, higher levels of social isolation were associated with lower scores in the composite cognitive score, verbal fluency, and forward digit span.
Importantly, the association between loneliness, social isolation, and cognitive function remained significant even after excluding individuals with depression. This suggests that loneliness and social isolation have independent effects on cognitive decline.
Based on these findings, the researchers suggest that interventions targeting social participation and the maintenance of emotionally supportive relationships could help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of cognitive impairments in middle- and older-aged adults.
P.S: My IQ has severely decreased towards the 70-80 mark... from 85.
