The program doesn’t look at your assets, just income. I am a NEET so I had less than $8k income for 4 years (most years it was $0). I didn’t lie or anything, and I am virtually homeless so I qualified. I checked out of my hotel and had to stand outside in the streets for over an hour while passerbys stared at me until the halfway house workers picked me up like animal control.

Renting a room and having roommates in NYC is like $1000 minimum alone, usually $1500-$2000 a room and even $3500 a room for somewhere not in the hood. To get your own studio is like $3500 alone.

Why spend $2k a month just to get a basic roommate housing when it doesn’t get me women?

My room is very run down. Stained walls. Stained floor. Steam radiator with the window open even though it’s snowing outside. Mild mildew smell. Second day here I began scrubbing the shit out of the floor. It’s not The Ritz, but it’s fucking free, you guys, and I don’t have to sleep in a car (I used to be homeless before). There’s a bunch of rules but for a homebody friendless NEET like me, it’s not a big deal. No drugs, no drinking, no guests (not that I am bringing any chicks over anyway). Can't have knives or scissors in the kitchen either, no toaster ovens or air fryers, but I don't really cook anymore. No wifi so I bought unlimited data on my phone and using hotspot.

My case worker told me that some of the guys have been living in the house for like 2-3 years while getting $5k a month from disability. I don’t get $5k a month from disability, I get $1k. But if I get more gubbermint gimmes I can go hobomaxxing.

I can’t believe I am relying on gubbermint gimmes. I am staring at the wall right now.

I get $1k in veteran disability but if I apply for SSDI and qualify, I can get more. Then if I use the GI bill in NYC I can get $5k a month to pocket. I spend $1k on food and transportation a month (I don't cook or meal plan all the time and I eat a lot of meat). My case worker recommended me to apply for section 8 housing but he doesn't know I have six figures in savings

My third night here but every fucking night or morning something is happening that wakes me up. First night, at 11pm-2am I heard someone shouting and probably on the phone, and venting at a female security guard. Then today a female case worker was here and we chatted (I didn't hit on her because I didn't want to be kicked out), and I told her about last night and she said "oh yeah I know who you're talking about. He's been here for 2 years". And then ambulances wailing over and over again. Second night, I wake up to fucking helicopters at 6am blaring for like 30 minutes straight and then other halfway people rambling at 12am at night.

thanks for sharing your experience. you have my upmost respect. the question is what are you doing with all that spare time? do you have a side hussle or just chill.

So they get 1k a week? hmm don't know about that...

I haven’t done much of anything while neeting. shitpost online, ChatGPT, travel, run errands, nap

My room. I scrubbed the floor over five times and it's still like that. There's a certain smell to this room and the fridge makes everything taste a certain way. But hey I am off the streets and the other residents aren't stealing or stabbing me, can't really complain.

I'm in a Bongland setup a bit nicer but similar

No savings let alone six figures though JFL

Truecel living conditions.
It's worse than the pictures look. This is just my room, but the rest of the building and the residents and the hood are something else. My building superintendent is this old guy who can't aim, and he pisses all over the toilet seat. Every so often I come to the bathroom and see the floor and the toilet seat caked in dry piss (he doesn't put up the lid). Outside there is literally dog shit everywhere, and frozen dog piss.

This halfway house still smells like lowkey weed smoke and alcoholic body odor especially at night. The other residents are either doing these inside their rooms, or doing them outside and coming back home with the odor still lingering. Most of the residents dont even live on the same floor but upstairs and I can still smell it in my hallway. Only my room doesn't smell like anything. This place is only a sober house on paper, if they actually enforced the rules, this place would be nearly empty, and it already is. I am sure they rather residents have a place to stay rather than expecting 100% sobriety. I am not snitching. I might be the only one who doesn't smoke or drink or do drugs in this building, even the case workers take smoke breaks. My caseworker kept repeating and asking if I did any drugs, smoking or drinking, he can't believe that I don't do that shit.

Most of the hood here don't speak English, only Spanish. I barely can communicate with anyone here even the kids lol. I do hand signs. Also, so many people at the local laundromats. Also it's a whole day's trip to get anywhere outside this hood. The buses and trains take an hour to get anywhere, and it's brutal. American public transit is just ghetto in general.

Imagine being a resident here. Taking unreliable slow public transit to work, in a precarious situation where you get penalized for being late, making only enough to pay bills but not save, and then ALSO having to out to wash and dry your clothes, waiting an hour sitting at the laundromat unlike having washer and dryer at home where you can set and forget, and if you are lugging around kids and carrying even more laundry because you have kids, it's even harder.

I am waiting for my next bank statement to come out so I can apply for HUD housing (yes I can still apply since they don't look at assets, only income, and I am a NEET on disability so it's barely anything).

Well written.

That is brutal. I would not want to put up with something like that. :f:

Get out of there before you get raped while sleeping by some migrant

What's with the bubbling on the walls and roof? Looks like mould maybe, or around that orange iron water stain. Mould isn't good for you, you don't want to stay trapped there too long.

Yeah it could be mold. The wall seems to be just shitty painting, like painting over the wall over and over again until it's all bubbly instead of smooth. You're supposed to sand down the previous paint before you paint the wall again. But this is a halfway house where people were literally on the streets before being brought in, or they're on some sort of substance, so I guess the people running the program decided this was good enough for the homeless and the poors. Better than freezing out on the streets (which is true). Everything tastes and smells like SOMETHING in this room. The fridge makes all my food have this weird taste even after I cleaned it out with soap and water, is it mold? idk. Tomorrow they're considering taking me to a more permanent housing. This room is just for two weeks for them to see if I start acting crazy or relapse into drugs or something. They said some residents in this building have stayed in the "trial" period for like months or even a year, or they keep coming in and out for years.

We'll see how the longterm halfway house is. In NYC I can go to school and pocket $5k/month using the GI bill and invest that in nvidia stocks or something. This is the time to stock up the cash. But the school is like an hour away via public transit. The public transit is brutal in the US. I fucking hate it. American public transit is sketch and shitty in general, it's like "fuck you" to the poor, smelly people with unwashed clothes and fat diabetic sweat smell and other diseased body odors, and it's pretty much a homeless shelter in itself. Not as bad as back in Chicago but still pretty shit. I miss the public transit in Korea and Japan, it didn't feel like "fuck you for being a poor" in those country to use the train or the bus, and the people didn't smell like shit and scream in public on their phones like in the US cities.

My caseworker is also looking at getting an employment assistance for me so we'll see how that goes.

Would likely just be spills and stuff in the fridge over time, you'd need to air out the fridge by turning it off and opening the doors for a while to get rid of it, obviously not something anyone ever does.

are you in america?

If you have that much money, why don't you buy a motorhome? Go to Alaska or the North-West, or wherever you want.

Surgeries
I considered leg lengthening surgery but even then I will still be a shortcel. For face it will cost like double jaw surgery and implants. I dont have anyone to take care of me and I also live in a halfway house with no elevator
