I liked Light more than L in Death Note, but yeah he made a lot of stupid mistakes due to being impulsive. But the plot required Light to make several big mistakes because he otherwise couldn't have been caught in a way that would make any sense seeing how he had a magical untraceable murder weapon with a 100 percent instakill rate that could kill anyone on earth from anywhere.
I chalk his mistakes up to being impulsive/low inhib/impatient though. Killing the first criminal he saw on TV was a forgivable mistake as he had no idea the death note even worked. But killing the fake "L" (lind L tailor) out of impulsiveness was a huge blunder. Up until that point L couldn't even be sure he was dealing with a human. But after that stunt it was obvious that Kira was a someone who could be fooled, and watching on TV (and that said person lived in the Kanto region).
A higher inhib and less impulsive Light would have been completely unstoppable, but it also would have made it an extremely boring and one-sided anime. The interactions and mind games between L and Light are what really made that anime after all.
