In reality, most people in Mexico have very low porcentaje of european "genes". The myth of the mexicans as an mestizo race was created in CDMX in order to build a sense of nationality in a country with most that 100 different lenguages. Actually when independence did finish most people in Mexico didn't even know spanish so what actually happen is that many indians stopped to identify themselves as indians and called themselves mexicans (even if they were toltecas, mixtecos, Yaquis, mayas, etc...).

Respect to Spain, though. They didn't tried to extermine the other lenguages and local cultures like the Mexican goverment later tried to do.
